The Karlup Board acknowledges that they are walking in the footsteps of Noongar elders and leaders across the Noongar Nation, whose stories and learnings are passed down through generations of elders and leaders to supporting those future generations to navigate their life journey. Karlup hopes to learn from both past and present elders and leaders to build the capacity of our community to develop and deliver better culturally safe solutions across Noongar Nations.

Providing a voice through membership and codesign

Karlup recognizes the strength, knowledge and resilience of our community and seeks to provide a voice to as a broad range of Aboriginal people living in our community as possible, elevating those quieter voices who might not otherwise have had an opportunity to tell their stories and/or express their views. To this end we will build our membership over the next five years to become as open and transparent to community as possible. We seek to be the ACCO of choice for the local Aboriginal community, and for those who might not wish to become a member, we will work alongside anyone who wants a voice to be involved in culturally safe codesign of Aboriginal led and delivered services.

Current Codesign opportunities can be found on the News and Events Page.

1. Increase affordable housing supply

Increasing affordable housing supply for the local community is a key strategic objective for Karlup. While the whole of Western Australia is in the grips of a homelessness crisis due to a housing shortfall, the Aboriginal community has been amongst the hardest hit.

We will

2. Prioritise Aboriginal Led and Developed Services

Karlup recognises the strength, knowledge and resilience of our community and seeks to provide a voice to as broad a range of Aboriginal people living in our community as possible, elevating and empowering those quieter voices who might not have had an opportunity to tell their stories and/or express their views.

We will

  • Build our General Membership by 50% every year to reach a minimum of 500 members by 2027. Find out more about becoming a member.
  • Provide a voice by prioritising and advocating for codesign/consultation opportunities with the greater Midland Aboriginal community in all project planning and evaluation. Go to our News and Events to find out about current opportunities.
  • Support the ongoing delivery and resourcing of the Moorditj Maaman and Deadly Yorgas groups. Contact us if you want to find out more about Aboriginal Men’s and Women’s Groups operating in Midland.
  • Take an active role in the delivery of NAIDOC events in Midland. Find out more about Karlup’s NAIDOC events by going to our News and Events page.

3. Improve Cultural Knowledge and Security

Karlup is informed by the Karlup Kaartdijin cultural framework. We believe that we are Moorditj (strong)
when we are connected to culture. Education and sharing kaartdijin (knowledge) are critical to increase
cultural competence in the local community.

We will

  • Create a community endorsed Panel of Elders in Midland to build cultural authority and oversight of activities. Got to our News and Events Page to register your interest.
  • Work with the local Aboriginal community to codesign place based cultural protocols training which can be delivered to and /or by community
  • Work with the local Aboriginal community including other ACCO’s, Moorditj Maaman and Elders to codesign an on-country trauma informed healing program
